A Most Agreeable Place is dedicated to sharing the stories and images of British Columbia’s early bookselling scene (and sometimes its more contemporary scene!).
I am a Vancouver-based book editor and writer with an interest in local history, and the idea for this blog sprang from a realization that very little is known about the characters who pioneered bookselling in the province or about the establishments they operated.
Having now spent months researching online and in libraries and archives, I have discovered a wealth of material about these people and long-gone places. Through this blog and other writing, I aim to bring this fascinating corner of BC history to light (including in a historical timeline as I gather and share material). From time to time, I also blog about today’s bookstores and related bookish subjects. Enjoy!
